La Mesa road project to resurface 51 streets

Starting last week, the City of La Mesa was to begin the process of repairing and sealing approximately 2.65 million square feet of roads around the city. This project highlights an ongoing effort to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure.

“We’re committed to preserving the quality and safety of our roadways,” Mayor Mark Arapostathis said. “The City is dedicated to proactive maintenance and demonstrates our commitment to providing reliable and efficient transportation networks for our community.”

Over the next few weeks, crews were to be preparing various streets for slurry.

The first step of this process is to clear roads of anything that may hamper the slurry seal’s ability to adhere by removing striping and weeds. Next, they will crack seal various streets. Crack sealing involves the process of placing an adhesive on small cracks on road surfaces to prevent further deterioration.

Slurry application is scheduled to commence in early April, followed by restriping of the streets.

This process involves the application of a thin layer of asphalt emulsion, aggregate (sand), and additives. This approach not only enhances the appearance of the City’s more than 153 miles of streets; it also helps to prevent further deterioration caused by weather and daily wear and tear. The project aims to extend the life of roadways while reducing the costs associated with asphalt pavement replacement.

The slurry project is expected to be completed by June 2024.

Residents and motorists are advised to be cautious and adhere to traffic control measures while the slurry seal work is in progress. The drying time for slurry seal application varies depending on the weather.

The City of La Mesa maintains roadways on a seven-zone cycle.

Roadways are selected based on multiple factors including: maintenance history, average daily traffic, types of vehicle load, paving history and types of roadway pavement failure.
