La Mesa’s Earth Day Fair grows

La Mesa’s Earth Day Fair is slated to grow again with more vendors, a wider footprint and higher crowds expected.

Taking place Saturday, April 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MacArthur Park (4900 Memorial Dr.), the festival aims to teach residents about environmental sustainability in a fun and approachable way.

The typical festival activities will be present, like a live DJ, vendor booths and food trucks, but with an environmental twist. Several food vendors will be vegetarian, a diet which contributes less greenhouse gases to the climate and impacts the planet less.

This year, 70 vendors will spread across MacArthur Park, increase of 10 from last year, featuring eco-friendly products such as local artisans selling crafts, services from green businesses, and educational booths from environmental organizations.

Attendees can tour the city’s community garden and learn about tree planting, composting, sustainable gardening techniques and other topics during demonstrations. There will also be a clothing swap where unwanted clothes are given away while participants pick through the offerings for new-to-them items. Plus, bring broken household items to get them repaired at the Fixit Clinic and learn how to do simple repairs at home.

Earth Day Fair is an all-ages event.

A special Kids Zone will be located at Kuhlken Field, with fun ways for youth to learn about nature and the environment. Mad Science experiments will take place demonstrating environmental principles in an exciting, mind-blowing way.

The entire event is free and open to the public, with attendance climbing each year. The city hopes attendees will gain a greater awareness of environmental issues, learn practical ways to promote sustainability, and inspire action in their own lives.

“Earth Day serves as a reminder that we all share the responsibility of protecting our planet and environment for current and future generations,” said city staff. “It encourages the adoption of sustainable practices in our daily lives, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and making conscious consumer choices.”

The Earth Day Fair is a place for the city to promote its Climate Action Plan and encourage the entire community to take up its objectives.
